Frequently Asked Questions

Find clear, honest answers to the most common questions about consultations, surgical procedures, and recovery.

Consultations & Preparation

During your initial consultation, Dr. Patel will review your medical history, thoroughly examine the area of concern, and listen to your goals. You will discuss the available surgical or non-surgical options, potential risks, and expected outcomes. We encourage you to bring any questions or reference photos you might have.

Preparation varies by procedure. Generally, you will be advised to stop smoking, avoid certain medications (like blood thinners or aspirin), and arrange for someone to drive you home post-surgery. We will provide you with a comprehensive, personalized pre-operative checklist well in advance of your surgical date.

Surgery & Procedures

Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors, or disease. It is generally done to improve function, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance.

Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body to improve the patient's appearance and self-esteem.

This depends entirely on the extent of the procedure. Minor procedures (like small scar revisions) can often be done under local anesthesia, meaning you are awake but the area is numb. More complex surgeries (like rhinoplasty, breast surgery, or major reconstructions) require general anesthesia. This will be clearly discussed and decided upon during your consultation.

All surgical incisions produce scars. However, as a plastic surgeon, Dr. Patel uses highly specialized techniques to minimize scarring and places incisions in natural skin folds or hidden areas whenever possible. We also provide comprehensive scar management protocols post-surgery to ensure scars fade as much as possible over time.

Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery times vary wildly depending on the procedure and the individual patient's healing rate. Minor procedures may require only a few days of downtime, while major surgeries might require 2 to 6 weeks off work. You will be given a specific estimated recovery timeline during your consultation.

Light walking is encouraged almost immediately to promote blood circulation. However, strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and high-impact cardio should generally be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks post-surgery to prevent complications and ensure proper wound healing. Dr. Patel will clear you for exercise during your follow-up appointments.
